Improving on Public Chapter 493
In February 2019 Tennessee Rep. Micah Van Huss (House District 6) and Sen. Joey Hensley (Senate District 28) introduced legislation designed to improve upon the manner of death reconsideration process established in 2017’s Public Chapter 493. Overall, if HB 1005/SB620 passes, the next-of-kin would have the opportunity to appeal a manner of death classification of suicide prior to the death certificate being finalized and to bring in an outside forensic specialist if desired. This is one more step in granting families rights on behalf of their loved one to make sure that these decisions are based on overwhelming evidence and not personal opinions and biases. Please encourage your state representatives and senators to support this bill!
